Why did you choose the curriculum you are using this Fall in your Children's Ministry? Did you evaluate several curriculum lines, talk to publishers, ask other Children's Ministry leaders what they use and why? Did you think about the goals and mission of your Children's Ministry and then select the one which best matched what you want to do and engages children the most so they will remember what you teach? Did you choose the resource you believe will best help you teach the "whats" - what the Bible teaches and therefore what we believe?
Choosing curriculum is a "big deal". You want to select the one which will best help you to be the most effective as possible when it comes to teaching the "whats" because teaching the "whats" matters. We want children to know what we believe so they are able to know what they believe. We want them to have faith, this is why it matters for us to teach the "whats".
Choosing to teach the "whys" is an equally "big deal". Just as we want children to know what they believe, we also want them to know why they are able to believe it. If we only teach the "whats", there will come a day when some of them (growing numbers of them) turn away from the faith they once had because they do not know the "whys". Teaching the "whys" equips children to have a confident faith - this is why it matters for us to teach the "whys".
There are many curriculum options when it comes to teaching the "whats" but there are not many curriculum options available for us to teach the "whys". BioLogos has a fantastic curriculum for teens and young adults (check it out at this link), but if you are looking for resources to help you teach younger preschool and elementary age children, there are not many from which to choose. However; there is Anchored! Anchored is designed to engage children ages four through fourteen in teaching, activities, and discussion which will equip them to know the "whys" - why they are able to believe God is real, the Bible is true, God and science DO go together, and God is good!
We are able to help the children in our ministries grow up so they are able to "hold firmly to the trustworthy Word" as they have been taught - but for this to happen, we must teach it. When we do, they will know the doctrine they have been taught is sound and will be able to stand firmly with a confident faith!
Check out Anchored. It provides the tools you need to teach the "whys" to the children in your ministry and will equip parents and grandparents to teach the "whys" at home as well! You will find samples at this link and are able to order it in the bookstore at this link.
